Traditionally, history refers to Myanmar
as “the land of temples and pagodas.”
With the following feature, lets welcome and represent with Myanmar a new country on this blog, as well - a new part of the young generation of Metalcore!
Hailing from Myanmar (Burma) and now based in Thailand, the seven-piece band— Nay Htet Soe Moe [vocals], M Gam Ja Aung [guitar], Augustine [guitar], Lin Pyae [bass], Dave [drums], Hsan Moe Htet
[audio engineer], and Lynn Thant Naing [visual production]—strike a balance between gnashing metalcore intensity and skyscraper-size alternative melodies powered up by their collective struggles
and story. If Killswitch Engage and Linkin Park collided in a warzone, it might sound something like this…
As the story goes, Nay Htet found solace in heavy metal during his childhood in Myanmar—much like his bandmates. The future frontman effectively graduated from Guns N’ Roses and Aerosmith to the
likes of Slipknot, Bring Me The Horizon, A Day To Remember, and I Prevail.
Guitar and production offered a respite from “a difficult time at school,” releasing music of his own and endeavoring to form a band. In 2021, he caught a video of youngest member Lin online and
reached out. Simultaneously, the guitar duo of M Gam Ja and Augustine forged their own friendship and creative partnership at University.
Together, they made the decision to link with Nay Htet and Lin, cementing the core of AGAINST THE GRAVITY. Putting their heads down and channeling their focus, they made waves on DSPs with the
likes of “5 Minutes Earlier” and “Swal Nyi Chin,” generating hundreds of thousands of streams independently. At the same time, they proved themselves as a force of nature on stage. They packed
gigs in Myanmar and graced the bills of Metal Fest and OUTCAST FESTIVAL.
Up to this point, everything just set the stage for FAILED TO REMEMBER. Whether it be the burst of cathartic energy on “DOPE GOD” or the epic crescendo of the six-minute-plus finale “FAILED TO
REMEMBER,” the music teems with uncontainable and undeniable emotion. It’s the kind of intensity that could only come from a group of young men away from a home they never quite connected to in
pursuit of a dream that seemed impossible until now.
This energy surges through their 2024 FAILED TO REMEMBER EP as they stand up with a vital vision of their own codified in their moniker.
“To us, ‘GRAVITY’ refers to all of the bad things that come into life such as problems, dark society, lies, and the fakes of the world,” the band agree. “So, the name means we are ‘AGAINST’
all of these things and many other negative aspects of life. That’s how we got our name, and it’s our identity.”
Stay tuned for what comes next!
